High bill self-assessment
Couple looking at bills

There are many reasons for high utility bills. Some of the causes are simple to resolve, while others take a little more effort and time to understand.

While high energy consumption can often be a major cause of a high bill, it is not always the only culprit. The following High Bill Self-Assessment will help you better understand and resolve any high bill concerns. It also empowers you to reduce energy waste and save money on future bills.

Follow the four steps below and complete the included forms to help determine what could be contributing to your high bill. If you still have concerns about your bill upon completion, please complete and submit the High Bill Site Visit Application so an EWEB Energy Management Specialist can follow up with you.

Step 1: Understanding your electric bill

(Estimated time: 5-10 minutes)

Take a look at your bill to understand the various components and charges. A high bill may not necessarily reflect high energy consumption.

Step 2: Diagnosing your high bill

(Estimated time: 5 minutes)

Learn about the most common causes of high energy consumption. Read through each item to determine if it may have occurred during the billing period of your high bill. By ruling out these items, you can significantly narrow down the factors contributing to your high energy consumption.

Step 3: Data collection and self-testing

(Estimated time: 10-30 minutes)

There are a number of tools that can help you measure your energy consumption and better understand your energy use. See three tools that can help you track down possible causes of a high bill.

Step 4: High bill site visit application

(Estimated time: 5 minutes)

If you have already completed steps one through three, but still have concerns about your bill, please complete the High Bill Site Visit Application and submit it to EWEB:

Email: EMS.answers@eweb.org
Mail: Eugene Water & Electric Board
Energy Management Services
PO Box 10148
Eugene, OR 97440-2148

Upon receipt of your application, you will be assigned an energy management specialist who will contact you and assist with resolving your high bill concern. Please note that a site visit may not resolve your high bill concern. Several variables come into play that can affect energy consumption and some of these may no longer be in effect at the time of the site visit.
