Energy Supply Planning

The future will look different from the past.

Demand for EWEB's energy is forecasted to rise, while the energy resources we have historically turned to are undergoing change. So EWEB is in the process of reassembling our electric supply portfolio for the long-term economic, environmental and social benefit of our community.

For the last several years, EWEB has conducted extensive analysis to determine which portfolio of resources are the best fit. EWEB achieved a major milestone in that analysis with the 2023 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which yielded several key insights that sparked several new studies.

One key insight was the EWEB should continue to rely on the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) for the bulk of our energy. BPA is a federal agency that sells energy from large dams in the Columbia River Basin to customer-owned utilities like EWEB. BPA currently supplies approximately 80% of EWEB's energy.

In December 2025, EWEB signed a new contract with the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) that runs through 2044, securing access to between $2.5 and $3 billion worth of energy.
