EWEB customers who contribute Greenpower voted to award a $50,000 grant to SquareOne Villages.
Every other year, Greenpower subscribers select a nonprofit or other institution for the Greenpower Grant award. EWEB opened grant applications to eligible organizations in late February and received seven proposals by the close of the application period on March 26.
Funds for the grant come from voluntary Greenpower customer contributions. Any EWEB customer can participate in the EWEB Greenpower program. In addition to purchasing clean, renewable energy, Greenpower customers help fund local solar installation, K-12 educational events, and the Greenpower Grant.
This is the first Greenpower Grant award for SquareOne Villages, which is a community land trust with a mission of creating democratic communities with homes that are permanently affordable and environmentally sustainable.
The grant funds will be used to support the purchase and installation of a 172 KW photovoltaic system at organization’s Rosa Village Co-op, which is being constructed in the Trainsong Neighborhood. The system will supply power to all 52 residential homes, as well as the Common house, significantly reducing electrical usage and lowering operating costs.
SquareOne prioritizes sustainability and energy efficiency in every aspect of development, designing homes to minimize energy consumption to create resilient, low-impact housing.
“SquareOne is honored to be selected for EWEB’s 2025 Greenpower Grant,” says Andrew Heben, Executive Director at SquareOne Villages. “We are committed to making progress on the intertwined issues of housing affordability and climate change.
“This grant will help us advance that commitment by funding a solar photovoltaic system at our upcoming Rosa Village Co-op, which will include 52 new resident-owned homes that will be permanently affordable and deeply energy efficient,” Heben added.

The Greenpower Grant is offered every other year and is open to tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, schools and academic institutions or government and other public agencies.
This year, in addition to SquareOne Villages, submissions came from the Friends of Trees, Greenhill Humane Society, Lane Community College, Plaza de Nuestra Comunidad, the University of Oregon and the Very Little Theatre. Applications included proposals for solar electric panels, electrification of inefficient technology, renewable transportation, and neighborhood tree plantings. The next Greenpower Grant will be awarded in Spring 2027.
