We’re proud to announce that EWEB has been honored with two Excellence in Public Power Communications Awards from the American Public Power Association (APPA). These national awards celebrate outstanding creativity, storytelling, and communication in the public power sector. EWEB received top honors in both the Web/Social Media and Video categories, recognizing our commitment to transparent, accessible, and community-focused communication.
Web/Social Media: Ice Storm Communication Campaign
During the January 2024 ice storms, about 40% of EWEB’s customers experienced power outages, with some outages extending over a week due to widespread damage and access challenges in rural areas. The EWEB Communications Team worked with Operations, Engineering, and other teams to launch a comprehensive Ice Storm Communication Campaign. This campaign kept customers informed on restoration efforts, safety information, and local emergency resources during the extended outage period.
The campaign provided multiple daily updates across social media, our website, and local media channels. Each morning, customers were informed about the day’s crew locations, anticipated delays, and restoration estimates for certain areas. Midday updates shared progress on restoration, safety reminders, and guidance for property repairs. In the evening, we summarized the day’s work and remaining outages, using photos and videos of field crews working tirelessly to restore service. Through this coordinated effort, the campaign reached over 560,000 views on Facebook alone and engaged thousands more across other platforms.
Video: “Hey Eugene! Try out the EV-life with the GoForth EV Car Share!”
In collaboration with Forth Mobility, the City of Eugene, and St. Vincent dePaul, EWEB produced a lighthearted promotional video introducing the GoForth Electric CarShare program, which provides affordable electric vehicle (EV) access to underserved segments of our community. Styled like a “Carpool Karaoke” segment, the video encouraged residents to envision using the service for everyday errands and demonstrated the ease and convenience of EV carsharing. With strong engagement on YouTube, Facebook, and other platforms, the video helped increase awareness and enthusiasm for affordable, eco-friendly transportation options within Eugene.
These awards are significant for our team at EWEB, as they highlight our commitment to informing our customer-owners about important utility news, complex energy and water issues, and valuable products and services.
Earlier this year, EWEB was also honored with two awards from the Northwest Public Power Association, earning first place for Excellence in Communications for our Pledge to Prepare campaign and third place in the video category for our Value of Electricity video.
